College Failure - Free Essay Example
I was having a hard time with this subject at first. Then I watched Chelsea (my soon to be step daughter) who had recently graduated High School. Chelsea has been having a hard time adjusting to her classes. I have been trying to figure this out, because I had planned on her helping me through college. Now, I have been the one helping her through this process. At first, I just thought it was complete laziness keeping her from realizing her potential. Then I realized that a number of different factors have been holding her back. I will attempt to identify the causes for college course failure among students. In the end, I hope the causes for this epidemic will help those who are graduating from high school. Those who are going back to school and educators in general. It is easy to put the blame on laziness. Professors and parents often believe the reason for failing grades is the lack of participation by the student. They could be right in some cases, but more often than not they are wrong. Picture this, a student comes home from school they grab something to eat and then they head to their room. Common sense will tell you that what they should do is start on their homework. The reality is that they start watching youtube or messaging their friends on facebook. I have seen this time and time again in my own house. What if the reason for this is not what it seems? In high school, I have notice vastly different teaching techniques than what I remember. No child left behind is one of those changes. I think the program started out with good intentions, but made it difficult for a student who wants to transition from high school to college. I saw the general expectations of student work in high school significantly decrease from twenty years ago. Now students just show up and they pass them along, hoping they will eventually do better later on. In my opinion, this is not good for a student who wants to go to college. The education system needs to get better at preparing graduates for an easier transition into college. They should have higher expectations of their students work. I have been in college for half of a semester now. I have seen papers that students are writing in some of my classes. Some of the papers I have peer reviewed looks barely eighth grade level. Yet. somehow they have managed to graduate from high school. This may seem harsh, but I am only reporting what Ive seen. The selection of wrong courses may also attribute to this course failure among students. Students seem to pick classes that their friends are in. They also tend to gravitate towards classes that they may deem easy. The fact is that every course in college has its own level of difficulty. I have a beginning art class that is more difficult (in my opinion) than the computer programming class that I am taking. Students do not take this into account when they are selecting classes. This results in the students hardly understanding the syllabus. When it is time to work on assignments they are completely confused and lose confidence in themselves. After this, the student just gives up and fails the course. Some people think a hefty working schedule coupled with full time course schedule may also be the cause of course failure. I will agree with this to some extent. I have a full time forty hour a week job. I need to keep this job to support my family. I also take fifteen credit hours of classes which is a full school schedule. So far, I am handing everything pretty well. I can see though, why a high school graduate may have difficulties adjusting to this type of schedule. During high school if these students had job they may have only been able to work 15 to 20 hours a week. Now that they are out of high school, they want to make more money and live on their own. This is admirable but in most cases not advisable. High school graduates have not had the years of experience juggling work, fun and a homelife to be successful in college. They would probably do better to gradually work up to a full time work schedule, as they get more comfortable with college. Another reason for course failu re among college students is distractions. It is easy to get distracted with friends or phones.

The Definition of Falling Action in Literature
The falling action in a work of literature is the sequence of events that follow the climax and end in the resolution. The falling action is the opposite of the rising action, which leads up to the plots climax. Five-Part Story Structure Traditionally, there are five segments to any given plot: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Exposition is the early section of the story, giving audiences information about the status quo when we first join the characters and plot. This section will often contain backstory or information about how things currently are, so that when the rest of the plot is set into motion, the change (and the stakes) is clear. Rising action typically happens after some sort of inciting incident, which shakes up the status quo presented in the exposition and requires the characters to launch into a new journey, off of the expected path. During this section of the story, characters will encounter new obstacles and continually increasing stakes, all moving towards the biggest moment of conflict in the whole story, called the climax. The climax may be one of two moments: it may be a moment in the middle of the story that serves as a point of no return (Shakespeare plays are a great example of this format), or it may be the final battle type of moment near the end of the story. The placement of the climax matters less than the content: this should be the single greatest moment of change and conflict for the hero. Falling action follows the climax and is the exact inverse of rising action. Instead of a series of events that increase in intensity, falling action is a series of events that follow the biggest conflict and show the fallout, whether good or bad. The falling action is the connective tissue between the climax and the resolution, showing how we get from that major moment to the way the story ends. Purpose of Falling Action In general, falling action demonstrates the consequences of the climax. Following the climax, the story will head in a different direction as a direct result of the choices made during the climax. The falling action, therefore, follows that part of the story and depicts the way those choices affect the characters going forward. Falling action will often de-escalate the dramatic tension following the climactic moment. This doesnt mean that it lacks conflict or dramatic tension, only that its aimed in a different direction. The momentum of the story is no longer accelerating towards a moment of confrontation, but instead moving towards a conclusion. New complications are less likely to be introduced, at least not ones that will re-escalate the stakes or change the direction of the story; by the time a plot reaches the falling action, the ending is in sight. Examples of Falling Action in Literature There are many examples of falling action in literature because almost every story or plot requires a falling action to reach a resolution. Most storylines, whether in a memoir, novel, play, or movie have aà falling action thatà helpsà the plot progress toward its end. If you see some titles here that you recognize, but havent read them yet, then beware! These examples contain spoilers.à Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone In Harry Potter and the Sorcererââ¬â¢s Stone, by J.K. Rowling, the falling action occurs after Harry faces Professor Quirrell and Voldemort, which would be considered the climax (the moment of greatest dramatic tension and conflict). He survives the encounter and is whisked away to the hospital wing, where Dumbledore explains more information about Voldemorts vendetta and what dangers Harry is likely to face in the future. Little Red Riding Hood In the fairy tale/folk taleà Little Red Riding Hood, the story reaches its climax when the wolf announces that he will eat the young protagonist. The series of events that happen after this conflict to lead to the resolution are the falling actions. In this case, Little Red Riding Hood screams out, and woodcutters from the forest come running to the grandmothers cottage. The story isnt yet resolved, but these falling actions are leading to its resolve.à Romeo and Julietà A final example is depicted in the classic playà Romeo and Julietà by William Shakespeare. Traditionally, Shakespeare plays correspond the five elements of plot to each of the five acts, meaning that Act 4 in a Shakespeare play will contain the falling action. After the climactic moment in the play, the street fight where Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo kills Tybalt, then flees, the falling action indicates that the plot is headed toward a sad, but unavoidable, resolution. Juliets feelings are confused between her love for her new secret husband, who is banished from Verona and mourning her beloved cousin who just died by Romeos hand. The decision she makes to take the sleeping potion is a direct result of the deadly fight and Romeos exile, and it leads towards the tragic resolution of the conflict.

Television is one of most pervasive and influential forms of media. Sadly, there is a lot of sexual context on television. It is in movies, TV shows, and commercials. Sometimes it is subliminal but it can be obvious. I can admit to it myself I was completely ignorant to the sexual content in television shows I watched as a child, like show in Figure 1 now that I am older, I can clearly see the signs. Besides being naturally curious, TV is usual the first exposure to sexual content. Research show that sexual content is being shown early through television and that children 6 to 11 are attached to shows with high sexual content (Teenage Sexuality 39). (Figure 1 As a child, I did not notice the sex reference to pornographic magazines in the show Ed, Edd, and Eddy, 2003.) Not only is TV causing adolescents to become more curious but it is also influencing ideas about what is normal and expected during sexual activity (Kittleson 74). Because the way sex is present on TV, adolescents depict it as an activity without risks or consequences. Adolescents become oblivious to unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and even sex addiction. It was until recent years that TV networks like MTV start airing reality shows about teenage girls becoming young parents. Shows such as Teen Mom and 16 Pregnant have a reverse effect on society because the teenage mothers of these shows are becoming celebrities off their pregnancies. Lasting Influences of the Classical World free essay sample
The lasting influences of the classical world on other cultures across time are shown by analyzing the links between Greek Drama in the time of Aristotelian, on Shakespeare, and on a modern comic text of my choice. Through the use of humor devices, theatre conventions and by developing a show of understanding of the serious messages, the links between the three texts are shown and analyzed. Gods and goddesses were superior in the time of Aristotelian. This is very surprising in Aristotelian Frogs due to the fact that Aristotelian shows Dionysus, he god of wine and fertility, as a confused coward who has lost his identity. It showed a lack of respect for the gods however, since comic plays were like religious ceremonies, anything against the gods were deemed to be a good humored Joke. Many other gods such as Heraclites is also brought up in the play which also implies that link with mythology. Costume is used to illustrate how Heraclites looks like and is used for role changing. Throughout the play, we see Dionysus and Xanthium exchanging costumes for role reversal. We first see Dionysus illustrated to be wearing lion hide and carrying a club, which is supposed to be Heraclites.. In Shakespearean Midsummer Nights Dream, he represents Theses as the King of Athens and Happily as the queen. By placing these characters into thes e roles, it immediately implies Mythology. This also associates with the other two characters in the play, Oberon and Titanic. They have been given familiar mythological features that then relate them to Zeus and Hear. The Shakespearean audience would have known about the stories of Theses and would have therefore been able to recognize is queen Happily. They would have understood the myth where Theses succeeded the Amazonian warrior women, that he was the one who defended Athens from them and had taken Happily, their queen, as his wife. This myth classifies Theses as the symbol of stability and power, which then reminds the audience that Theses word is law. So when he informs Hermit that if she does not follow her fathers order to marry Demerits, then she must either to die the death or to abjure (Act I Scene l) Another example could be Puck being correlated to Eros, the Greek god of love. The eve potion he applies over the characters eyes, to make them fall in love with the thirst person they lay sight upon waking up, is correspondent to Eros golden arrows which has a similar follow up. Shakespeare compares both characters more directly when Oberon says as he squeezes the love potion into Demerits eyes, Flower of this purple dye, Hit with Cupids archery, Sink in apple of his eye. (Act Ill Scene II) The fairies magic, which brings comedy into the play, is a very important element as it uses magic to illustrate the power of love, which is symbolized using a love potion, ND it Just creates this enchanting and dreamlike world. This misuse of magic brings utter chaos when Puck, Borons servant, accidentally applies some love potion to Lassoe rs eyes, however, in the end, this magic brings about restoring the balance of love. Also, Shakespeare uses parody to turn Greek mythology around to deliver comedy. In Midsummer Nights Dream, the character Nick Bottom and his cast of actors are chosen to perform the play Paramus and Thesis. This is a tragic play where two lovers end up killing themselves because they believe that the other is dead. However, in Shakespeare, Bottom and his cast end up putting on a terrible performance so that it ends up being seen as a comedy rather than tragedy. One of the comic parts in this parody play is that there is a female character in Paramus and Thesis and the role had to be acted out by a male. Just like in the time of Aristotelian, females had no dominance in society so all female characters had to be acted out by a male. The male actor that had to portray the female character was very amusing to the audience as he had to wear the appropriate clothes for the harasser, had to add cushion onto his chest to impersonate a bosom and he tried very hard to speak in a woman like way. His voice impersonation of a woman was very amusing as he sounded very weird and not woman like. However he realizes that his impersonation of a womans voice made the play more comedic rather than tragic and so he stops and continues to speak in his normal voice. This was the part of the parody that was very dead serious. As soon as the male actor returned to his normal voice, the audience no longer saw him as comedic. Thats so Raven is a supernatural teen sitcom television series that started at 2003 and ended at 2007. Its about a teenage girl named Raven whose dream is to be a fashion designer but time to time, she sees psychic visions of the near future. She attempts to either make these come true or prevent them which ends up in putting herself and others in terrible but hilarious situations. Many humor devices are used consistently throughout the whole series. Visual humor, slapstick and other techniques are used. Also, costume is used to bring comic situations and it also brings visual humor. For example, in one episode, Raven is forced to wear a security guards uniform because she sees a vision that her little brother would be in trouble. She also impersonates a security guard by changing her voice and wears a fake moustache. The other visual humor used here is that the pants are way too big for her that she has to constantly keep holding it up. At one point, they all come down and bring a big laugh. The similarity between this modern comic text and Aristotelian is that they boot involve the supernatural. In Aristotelian time, Gods were superior, worshipped and f you went against them, you were committing a big crime. However for Thats so Raven, the supernatural is viewed differently. Raven had to keep her psychic powers a secret from the public and she only told her close friends and family. This is because being supernatural wasnt socially accepted in her community and if the public knew about it, they would view her differently Just because of it. They could either think she was a maniac or someone superior. This is similar to how gods are viewed. If someone in Athens knew you were a god, they would treat and view you differently.

18 Types of Spanish Verbs There may be as many ways of classifying Spanish verbs as there are people doing it, but discovering how Spanish treats different verbs differently is nevertheless a key part of learning the language. Heres one way of looking at the types of verbs, keeping in mind, of course, that verbs can fit into more than one classification. 1. Infinitives Infinitives are verbs in their most basic form, the way you find them listed in dictionaries. Infinitives by themselves tell you nothing about who or what is performing a verbs action or when. Spanish infinitives- examples include hablar (to speak), cantar (to sing), and vivir (to live)- are the rough equivalent of the to form of English verbs and sometimes of the -ing form. Spanish infinitives can function as verbs or nouns. 2, 3, and 4. -Ar, -Er, and -Ir Verbs Every verb fits into one of these types based on the last two letters of its infinitive. In Spanish there is no verb that ends in anything other than one of these three two-letter combinations. Even verbs that are made up or imported such as surfear (to surf) and snowboardear (to snowboard) require one of these endings. The distinction among types is that they are conjugated based on the ending. 5 and 6. Regular and Irregular Verbs The vast majority of -ar verbs are conjugated in the same way, and the same is true for the other two ending types. These are known as regular verbs. Unfortunately for Spanish students, the more used a verb is, the more likely it is not to follow the regular pattern, being irregular. 7 and 8. Defective and Impersonal Verbs The term defective verb is usually used to refer to a verb that isnt conjugated in all its forms. In traditional Spanish, for example, abolir (to abolish) has an incomplete conjugation set. Also, soler (to usually do something) doesnt exist in all tenses. Most defective verbs are also impersonal verbs, meaning that their action isnt performed by a distinct person or thing. The most common such are the weatherà verbs such as llover (to rain) and nevar (to snow). Since theres no logical reason to use forms that mean something like we rain or they snow, such forms dont exist in standard Spanish. 9 and 10. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs The distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs is important enough to Spanish grammar that the classification is given in most Spanish dictionaries- vt or vtr for verbos transitivos and vi for verbos intransitivos. Transitive verbs require an object to make a complete sentence, while intransitive verbs do not. For example, levantar (to lift or raise) is transitive; it must be used with a word that indicates what is lifted. (In Levantà ³ la mano for He raised his hand, mano or hand is the object.) An example of an intransitive verb is roncar (to snore). It cannot take an object. Some verbs can be transitive or intransitive depending on the context. Most of the time, for example, dormir is intransitive, as is its English equivalent, to sleep. However, dormir, unlike to sleep, can also mean to put someone to sleep, in which case it is transitive. 11. Reflexive or Reciprocal Verbs A reflexive verb is a type of transitive verb in which the verbs object is also the person or thing performing the action of the verb. For example, if I put myself to sleep, I could say, Me durmà , where durmà means I put to sleep and me means myself. Many verbs that are used in a reflexive way are listed in dictionaries by adding -se to the infinitive, creating entries such as dormirse (to fall asleep) and encontrarse (to find oneself). Reciprocal verbs take the same form as reflexive verbs, but they indicate that two or more subjects are interacting with each other. Example: Se golpearon uno al otro. (They beat up on each other.) 12. Copulative Verbs A copulative or linking verb is a type of intransitive verb that is used to connect the subject of a sentence with a word that describes it or says what it is. For example, the es in La nià ±a es guatemalteca (The girl is Guatemalan) is a linking verb. The most common Spanish linking verbs are ser (to be), estar (to be), and parecer (to seem).à Verbs that arent copulative are known in Spanish as verbos predicativos. 13. Past Participles A past participle is a type of participle that can be used to form the perfect tenses. Most past participles end in -ado or -ido. As in English, past participles can also usually be used as adjectives. For example, the past participle quemado , from the verb quemar, meaning to burn, helps form the present perfect tense in He quemado el pan (I have burnt the bread) but is an adjective in No me gusta el pan quemado (I dont like burnt bread). Past participles can vary in number and gender like other adjectives. 14. Gerunds Present adverbial participles, often known as gerunds, end in -ando or -endo as the rough equivalent of English -ing verb forms. They can combine with forms of estar to make progressive verb forms: Estoy viendo la luz. (I am seeing the light.) Unlike other types of participles, Spanish gerunds can also function much like adverbs. For example, in Corrà © viendo todo (I ran while seeing everything), viendo describes how the running occurred. 15. Auxiliary Verbs Auxiliary or helping verbs are used with another verb to give it vital meaning, such as a tense. A common example is haber (to have), which is used with a past participle to form a perfect tense. For example, in He comido (I have eaten), the he form of haber is an auxiliary verb. Another common auxiliary is estar as in Estoy comiendo (I am eating). 16. Action Verbs As their name suggests, action verbs tell us what someone or something is doing. The vast majority of verbs are action verbs, as they include the verbs that arent auxiliary verbs or linking verbs. 17 and 18. Simple and Compound Verbs Simple verbs consist of a single word. Compound or complex verbs use one or two auxiliary verbs and a main verb and include the perfect and progressive forms mentioned above. Example of compound verb forms include habà a ido (he has gone), estaban estudiando (they were studying), and habrà a estado buscando (she will have been seeking). 10, 20, and 21. Indicative, Subjunctive, and Imperative Verbs These three forms, known collectively as referring to a verbs mood, indicate the speakers perception of a verbs action. Simply put, indicative verbs are used for matters of fact; subjunctive verbs often are used to refer to actions that the speaker desires, doubts or has an emotional reaction to; and imperative verbs are commands.
